CREATIVE WRITING

This paper serves to address Kurt Levin’s quote, “There is nothing so practical as a good

theory". It also serves to analyze the quote using the practical application of theories to real communication situations. The quote will then be unpacked and analyzed using a personal situation in which I applied two different communication theories discussed in West and Turner’s Introducing Communication Theory Analysis and Application in addition to class lecture.

A Research Analysis of the Overlap of Communication Theory and Modern Psychology

As an EWM major, each student is required to select a concentration for their studies and their work. Having a profound love for all things to do with science, I chose to pursue a concentration in research. I took courses communication theory and fundamental principles in psychology in order to perform research on the influence of propaganda, particularly during wartime. This research paper marked my first foray into the world of AP publication.

A Research Piece Describing the Influence of Written Propaganda During Wartime

As part of the EWM curriculum, students are required to take a course in the History of Illustrated Texts. For our final project, we are each tasked with selecting an illustrated text and then analyzing it based on a theme learned in class. Since my EWM concentration centered around the fusion between research and creative writing, I chose to analyze and research the historical significance of Baum's The Wizard of Oz. While story is revered as a childhood classic, the story carries a deeper, darker political allegory of populism and the gold standard. I reread The Wizard of Oz while simultaneously researching the rise and decline of populism at the turn of the 20th century and the political significance of the symbols used through the story.

An Analysis of Baum's Political Allegory Throughout the Wizard of Oz

Part of the law school admissions process entails writing personal statements describing an applicant's reasons for becoming a candidate for juris doctorate. These personal statements typically include discussion on an applicant's academic achievement, intended law field, and their individual character and how that character would make them an asset to the legal profession. The two personal statements found here are my personal statements for FSU and Stetson, respectively. Both my intent was to convey my authenticity and my passion for advocating for the citizens of Florida.

My FSU personal statement can be found by clicking on the title of this post. My Stetson personal statement can be found by clicking on the subtitle of this post.

Dance Marathon at the Florida State University is a non-profit organization that directly benefits Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. The event is held in the spring of each year for an entire weekend. Dancers stand for 20 hours as part of their commitment to honor those who cannot. Dance Marathon at the Florida State University has been nationally recognized as a top fundraiser and continues to exceed the Children’s Miracle Network fundraising expectation. For more information about Dance Marathon or to register for the event, visit noles4kids.org.

In my second year of law school, I took a Corporate Internship class to supplement my for-credit coursework with a legal firm and then with a criminal defense firm. My professor offered the class a list of career-oriented literature from which the class was to choose to read and then to write a "grown up book report". I choose Lean In: For Graduates by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, because of its basis in scientific emphasis on research-backed reasons in which women in the workplace should work to "lean in" with one another in order to create a more equal working environment.

In my third year as an Editing, Writing, and Media major, I began my study of the progression of rhetoric beginning with the "classics", such as Aristotle and Plato, through the modern era. My final research paper of my rhetoric study revolved around my interpretation of Dr. Martin Luther Kind Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, and the Biblical allusion Dr. King employed in order to appeal to the pathos of his audience.

As an Editing, Writing, and Media major, a required class in my course sequence was "What Is A text". "What Is A Text" focused on the evolution of the ways in which we communicate. We began the class with literary discussion on assigned novels and ended the course with a remediation project in which every student was tasked to choose a method of communication, and analyze that method using a different method of communication. I choose to analyze and critique the trends in modern social media by creating a blog in which I wrote in a traditional, prose-style manner.
